Churchtown

A club with five teams in Divisions 1, 2, 5 & 7  Churchtown have been consistent challengers to Southport at the head of Division 1 for a number of years, though have not managed to topple their great rivals. Their list of players has included Sarah Sankey and Joanne Wright, England internationals.

Formby

Pioneers

Q

"Q" Badminton Club play at Kew, in Southport DGH Spinal Unit gym.  They are a local friendly neighbourhood Badminton Club (not in the League) and they will always welcome new members.  Annual subscription is £10 and £2 per night.  Visitors are always welcome and are charged £3 per visit.  Access is round the road in front of the hospital, past A&E, and then just round the back where the gym entrance is signposted.

St. Cuthberts

St. Cuthberts merged with Phoenix at the end of the 2004/2005 season and increased from a 4 to a 6 team club until at the start of the 2007/08 season when they dropped their 6th team in the 6th Divison. They now have 5 teams in Divisions 2, 3, 4 & 6.

Southport

Southport is one of the largest clubs in the Southport Badminton League with 8 teams. Their 1st team finishing top of Division 1 every year from 1978 to 1999, being toppled in 2000 by Victoria Hall. They have won the Hudson Cup (for Division 1 teams and other clubs' first teams) a record 18 times.

Southsands

Southbank Road and Sandgrounders merged for the 1999/2000 season, creating an 8 team club. In the 1998/99 season Southbank Road had 3 teams and Sandgrounders 5.  By 2001/2 Southsands had 7 teams, but prior to the 2002/3 season both All Souls and Sacred Heart merged their clubs with Southsands, boosting the number of teams to 9. They currently have 11 teams after Ainsdale merged their teams at the start of the 2008/2009 season. There 11 teams are in all divisions except 3 & 6.

The first photo below, taken at North Meols, shows Andy Waterhouse and Karyl Cartwright receiving the Herbert Highton Cup from Kath Griffith, as winners of the 2002 Southsands mixed doubles tournament.  The second, taken at the Southsands AGM at the Hesketh Arms, shows Andy Bate and Maureen Rimmer receiving the 2001/2 Fleetwood Hesketh Shield from club Chairman, John Duncan, on behalf of winners Southsands 1.

Victoria Hall

Freshfield and St Peter's merged in the summer of 1998 to form Victoria Hall.

The Club currently has 5 teams in the League in Divisions 1, 4 & 6. They play their home games either at the Victoria Hall in Formby or at Greenbank High School, Hillside. The courts at Greenbank are also available on Friday evenings from 6-7pm for members' children under parental supervision.

Woodvale

Woodvale is one of the largest clubs in the Southport League with 9 teams. It started out in 1967 with 2 teams and now has teams playing across all levels in the League. The 1st Team is settled in Division 1, achieving third place in 1999/2000, its highest ever finish.  They welcomed Miles Johnson in 1999/2000, holder of a Commonwealth Games badminton medal.

The photos below show Woodvale V and Woodvale VIII at their cup finals, played December 2002.  Woodvale V came runners-up to Pioneers III in the St. Simon & St. Jude's Cup (Division 5 teams) whilst Woodvale VIII won the Inflight Cup (Division 8 teams).
